Travel Tuesday: San Diego Day Trip

Good Morning everyone! Sydnee here…. Again. We’re kind of slacking on blog post ideas at the moment so I thought I would share what we did on our recent one-day trip to San Diego, California. All of the pictures her were taken by me.

The day started out early… 5 am early but we wanted to get a full day there. Once we got there we basically spent the whole time finding somewhere to eat we had some places in mind but they were too crowded so we had to keep driving, but that wasn’t such a bad thing because we ended up by Scripps beach where Lindsey and I took a quick ankle dip in the water.

\From there we just decided to go to an old favorite to eat. Point Break Café on Shelter Island has some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. It is a quirky little café across the street from the ocean that has amazing chocolate chip pancakes. We got lunch there for the first time on this trip and let me tell you that burger is my best friend. It was cooked perfectly and it was the perfect size, the perfect size in burger language is “can barely fit it into my mouth” perfect. The fries were also really good so our whole family recommends this cute little restaurant in the heart of Point Loma.

After that we went to Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. It was really crowded but I still enjoy reading and looking at the cute little marine animals. My favorite thing is the view on the outside pictured here is the pier we were by in the first picture so we’re pretty high up.

\When we left Scripps we headed over to Seaport Village so we could do a little shopping and then have dinner before we left. Cierra and I both bought Tervis cups from the Tervis store (our guilty pleasure). Her cup has little donuts on it so it matches her blog planner and I got a Toronto Maple Leafs one because hockey season is coming up! After the Tervis store Lindsey and I headed to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront so we could get Starbucks, we both got Java Chip Frappes. Almost right after the Frappes we went to our favorite pizza place, Assagio’s Pizza Pasta Plus. They ran out of breadsticks (still salty about it) but the pizza was pretty dang good and the best way to eat pizza is by the ocean.

After we ate, it was time to head out so we got in the car to head back home to the heat. Did I mention that it was 70 degrees the whole time? Well it was and I loved it. It wasn’t a long trip by any means but it was nice to spend a day by the ocean then have Sunday to get ready for the week ahead. As they say, a Saturday at the beach is better than a Saturday at home! I’m not sure who says that or if that’s even a things but I like it! Keep Calm And Have A Cupcake

Hey Everyone!

It’s Cierra and today I’ve decided that we have earned a cupcake. We made it past Wednesday, now we’re on that weird day standing between you and your weekend and you have done so well. You got out of bed today, if you really overachieved and got dressed you earned extra sprinkles, so go you! And to help with the possible guilt of having a cupcake, I’m sharing with you a recipe for Chocolate Cupcakes, so you have to work for your reward. So without further ado:

Cupcakes:

  • 1 1/2 Cups AP Flour
  • 1 1/4 Cups Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa
  • 1 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 Cup Buttermilk
  • 2/3 Cup Oil
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Eggs

Heat oven to 350 Degrees F. Line 2 (12 cup) Muffin tins with cupcake liners. Set aside. In large bowl, blend all ingredients until moistened. Divide batter evenly among cupcake liners. Bake at 350 Degrees F. for 20 to 25 minutes.

Frost as desired and enjoy!!!

Keep Calm and Coffee On

Lindsey here, hoping that all of you are having a great day so far. I am back to work after what felt like a very short weekend. Then again, they always do!

I know that a few weeks ago I talked about Monday motivation and what I did personally to get motivated. Today, I would like to give you a few ideas on how to keep going once that Monday motivation wears off!

We’ve all been there- Sunday night, setting out your work out gear, planning your week down to the specific details, not know what curve-balls the week will throw at you. You crawl into bed intent on getting up early, not hitting the snooze button, going to work refreshed and ready to take on the day. Then you wake up still a little sleepy and conquer the day. You return home and think about the awesome day you had and how you are going to wake up tomorrow and do it again. If you are like me, some weeks it is just a struggle to crawl out of bed and pour a cup of coffee, let alone throw on my running shoes.

I am actively working on this and diligently trying to stick to my guns regarding working out and making the right choices for me.

Here are five tips to keep you going once the Monday motivation has worn off:

  1. Listen to upbeat music. One of the ways I can escape and regroup is through music. The right playlist can make the difference between owning the day or the day owning me because it has a huge effect on my attitude. I have found lately that I enjoy a combination of upbeat oldies and alternative as well as Disney ride soundtracks.
  2. Be realistic. I am guilty of setting lofty goals for myself on Sunday night. That is mostly because on Sunday night I am looking to the possibilities of what the week might hold and dreaming big! However, sometimes it is necessary to check myself and be realistic about what is going to be accomplished and what won’t. By doing this, I am making sure that, come Friday night, I am not regretting all the coulda-woulda-shoulda’s and can celebrate what I did accomplish.
  3. Treat Yo’ Self- That is what Donna would recommend and also what I recommend. Sometimes this treat can come in the form of a manicure and other times it might be a soft serve cone from McDonald’s. The important thing is that at the end of what you proclaim as a great week, it is important to celebrate and indulge yourself a little. You work hard and deserve it!
  4. Rest. I Cannot tell you how many times I have woken up on Monday rip roaring and ready to go, only to find that the next day I am dragging a little. This trend seems to continue through the week until I am so exhausted the idea of doing anything more than putting my pj’s is awful. That is what it is so important that you rest and give your body the time to relax and allows you to wake up feeling refreshed.
  5. Elsa said it best, Let It Go! What I mean when I say it is that sometimes, you just need to let it go- the stress, the sadness, the anxiety and look at all of the good things that are happening around you. This is one that I have to frequently remind myself to do. My job is not necessarily life or death but I have a boss that is a tad..high maintenance. Because of this, I sometimes have trouble checking my attitude and negative thoughts from the day at the door. However, I have found that if I can look at a the silver lining from the day and focus on the good things that happened, I can enjoy the rest of my evenings and weekends a little more.

Hey Everyone!

I hope that you all had a great week. I know that my sisters and I are very happy that it is finally Friday!

We will be resuming Friday Favorites again next week. For now, I will give you a little update as to what we’ve been up to lately.

  • Sydnee started her junior year of high school this week. With a number of honors classes and National Honor Society meetings, it is a good thing she has a good day planner! In addition, she is gearing up for a skating competition that is quickly approaching. Those early morning practice sessions make her super thankful that  an iced coffee is only a short drive away!
  • Cierra’s job is currently in the process of hiring some new employees so that in itself is stressful. In addition, she is gearing up for a few finals to finish up this current semester and move forward toward her bachelors. She is also gearing up to start back at the Farmer’s Market this September so switching into Girl Boss mode will require a bit of caffine!
  • Lindsey’s boss is back from a month long vacation which means getting back into the swing of daily clients and staying a little bit later at work. Luckily, they supply the coffee! In addition, she is entering her last semester of school. Thankfully, coffee helps provide the motivation needed to get through the tough weeks and long nights!

Desk Essentials


Hey Everyone, Cierra here. I hope you are all having a fantastic week so far, once we make it through today it will finally be the weekend. Doesn’t it feel like this week has gone on forever?
Anyways, since the theme for this week has been school/ work, I thought I would share with you my desk essentials. The desk in the picture above is mine and it’s where I write posts for this blog as well as my personal (www.mightrunforcupcakes.com), where I do my homework (currently studying for my bachelor’s in business management) and where I run my online bakery business (www.cierrasbakeshoppe.com). So it serves as the headquarters for my many adventures. A few, let’s be honest the list is never ending and changes on a day to day basis, of my essentials are:
– The magnetic whiteboard calender: this keeps track of my crazy schedule, tells me what I have coming up, my work schedule and what orders need to be filled when and vacations when I get the chance to get away.
– The Three Drawer organizer: I have two, the little one atop of the desk and a big one under my desk. These are lifesavers when it comes to keeping all of my important things close by. The bigger one holds my files, my cameras, tablets and my never ending notebook supply.
– The shelf that sits above my desk is my motivation/happy things shelf. It holds some of my favorite pictures, as well as, momentous to remind me why I work so hard.
– The small striped wooden box next to the baker Piglet, holds most of my post-its. Before I had this, I usually had to really search for something little to write on, so with this little holder I can keep it close and organized.
– My sisters and I have a weird addictions to pens. Whenever we go to Target we are always down the pen aisle, we have plenty but never enough it seems. So because of that issue I have 3 holders on my desk just for pens.
– In front of those pens is a coaster. Lindsey picked up these cute beach themed coasters for sydnee and I, while she was vacationing in Newport a few years back. That combined with the Brad Paisley Koozie has made such a difference to keeping the condensation from the daily ice coffees from making a watery mess.

“Mako” Move Monday!

Hello everyone! This week is our favorite week ever, do you want to know why? IT’S SHARK WEEK. Our whole family loves sharks and we’re big fans of the movie Jaws so you can imagine how excited we get when it’s time for Shark Week. Our posts this whole week will be all Shark themed so if you’re also a fan of this magical week then join us for a sharktastic week of really fun blog posts.

“Mako Move Monday” I know you’re thinking “what does this mean?” well it means WE CAME UP WITH A SHARK WEEK INSPIRED WORKOUT TO DO WHILE WATCHING SHARK WEEK! Make shark week a good workout week by doing this workout that we made by being shark week experts. Burn off the calories from all of the sharky snacks by getting up and moving while watching shows all about sharks.

How To: DIY Galvanized Metal Nautical Sign

Hey Everyone! Cierra here, today I’ll be sharing a step by step tutorial  on how to make your own galvanized metal sign. Since we are in the middle of summer, I went with a nautical stencil but the choice is yours!

 

What you will need:

  • Galvanized Metal Sign- You can find a small sign with decorative edges at Wal-mart for $2.97 or a crinkle kind of large sign for just a few dollars more.
  • Stencils- You can make your own stencil or find a wide variety at any craft store.
  • Multi-Purpose or Indoor/Outdoor Gloss Acrylic Paint
  • Little Sponges or Paint Brushes, really whatever your preference is
  • Masking Tape, this will come in handy with keeping the stencils still while painting

To begin, you are going to set the stencil how you want it, then take a few pieces of masking tape and secure the stencil to your sign.

Then using whichever color you decided to go with, and take the little sponge and dab onto stencil. Don’t get too much paint on the sponge because otherwise it will bleed under the stencil.

 

After you are done applying about two coats of acrylic paint (That will depend on the color you chose and how light or dark you want your specific color). Remove Stencil by lifting straight up, if you drag and there’s any wet spots left it will get ruined.

 

If you find any spots where the paint bled or any tiny imperfections, you can take a cue tip and some nail polish remover and use it like an eraser.

Then hang up wherever or display wherever you like and enjoy the hand-painted sign you just created! Have A great day!
